The Dougy Center Fire

On June 21, 2009 (Father’s Day) The Dougy Center experienced a catastrophic fire, which completely destroyed our beloved Southeast Portland home of more than 20 years.

Investigators have ruled the fire arson, but have no reason to believe The Dougy Center was specifically targeted. So far, the party or parties responsible for these crimes have not been apprehended.

The day after the fire, we began holding group sessions in our resource building next door. By the time our groups started again after the summer break, we were able to open a new temporary location in a renovated house on NE Glisan St. four miles away. We didn’t miss a single group!

The fire has not dampened our mission or our resolve, and we will rebuild. We are starting to think about what the new center should include to better help our children, teens and families.

The aftermath of this crime has been extremely draining, but we’ve been comforted by the tremendous outpouring of support from all over the world.

Starting May 18, The Dougy Center house will begin to be dismantled by DeContruction Services. About 85 percent of the materials will be reused or recycled, with a portion going directly to support affordable home repairs and community-based projects.
