Join The Dougy Center’s experienced and knowledgeable staff for an opportunity to learn the ins and outs of running a successful grief support program.
You will:
- Learn about the unique qualities of grief and loss and how to support grieving children, teens, young adults and parents.
- Get to observe and experience facilitating groups for grieving children and teens under the guidance of our professional, experienced staff and trained volunteers.
- Meet and share with participants from all over the United States and beyond who plan to start or have already established programs for grieving children.
- Learn how to set up and successfully run peer support groups for grieving children, teens, young adults and parents.
- Have the opportunity to get your individual questions answered by The Dougy Center staff. Receive tips and advice on administration, fundraising, Board development and marketing.
The Program
Developing a Peer Grief Support Program for Children and Teens
Learn the basics of leading peer-to-peer support groups for grieving children, teens and families. Experience how to create a safe environment for a children’s grief process and develop an understanding of the needs of grieving children of all ages. Practice running groups, leading groups and learn a wide range of strategies to support grieving kids.

- How to start a program like The Dougy Center’s, including networking, policies, procedures and staffing issues
- Enrolling families, placing children in groups, using referral services and accessing crisis intervention services
- Recruit, screen, train, place and supervise volunteers in their work with grieving children and families
- Design a center that fits the unique needs of your community
- Gain understanding of the unique qualities of grieving children and teens
- Develop your facilitation skills including reflection, awareness, communication, group facilitation skills, asking open-ended questions and more
- Learn how to work with grieving children, teens and adults
Effective Fundraising, Board Development and Marketing

- Develop fundraising skills and identify funding sources in your community
- Identify and build an individual donor base and endowment gifts
- Build a successful Board of Directors and Advisory Board

How to Register
Complete the application and registration forms for review. A $150 deposit must be received at the time of registration. If your application is not accepted, your full deposit (and other session payments) will be returned with a letter of explanation. Download Application

The Details
- The five days of training will take place on-site at The Dougy Center’s National Resource & Training Center facilities in Portland, Oregon.
- Lunch, morning and afternoon snacks and beverages will be provided each day.
